Mountain Goddess I
A4 mixed media in watercolour & ink on watercolour paper.

This piece is inspired by the ancient Mountain Goddess of the Alps known as Rhaetia or Margriata amongst many other names. Early Alpine settlers, dating as far back as the 5th to 8th century BCE, told of a woman who was found in the summer meadow which was forbidden for women.

Margriata worked in the Alps for 7 summers, and to work there, she had to cover her chest. In her 7th year, the shepherd’s son realized Margriata was a woman. Once discovered, she was ordered to leave the meadow but she left behind a dried spring, withered meadows, and weeping cows. Invisible to them for so long, she had been providing a golden ring of protection.

Eduard Renner, in his book “Golden Ring above Urion Raeto-Romanche folklore” (1991), cites an ancient Alpine hymn or blessing, which was sung every night asking the Mountain Goddess for protection.
